Vulvar varices embolization is an interventional radiology procedure used to treat symptomatic varicoceles in the vagina, vulva, and surrounding areas. Varices are enlarged veins, similar to varicose veins in the legs, that can cause pain, itching, discomfort, and swelling. Women may notice this problem because of visible lumps or twisted veins in the vulva or because of a dull, recurring pain. Sometimes there are no symptoms and varices are detected during a physical exam.
Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that can bring rapid relief to symptomatic varices and can be performed as an outpatient procedure. This reduces overall risk, complications, and recovery time.
