The Mammo Minute: New SoftVue 3D Breast Exam is a Game-Changer for Women with Dense Breasts
Dr. Arthy Saravanan discusses ARA’s new SoftVue 3D Breast Exam.
Welcome to the “Mammo Minute.”
My name is Dr. Arthy Saravanan, and I’m the Chief of the Breast Imaging Section at ARA Diagnostic Imaging.
Today, we’re going to talk about a new exam available at ARA for women with dense breasts that can increase breast cancer detection up to 20% along with your mammogram.
It’s called a SoftVue 3D breast ultrasound tomography examination, an easy and comfortable way to scan dense breasts without compression or radiation.
During the exam, the patient relaxes on an exam table, face down, and lowers her breast into an imaging chamber filled with warm water.
After adjustment, the scan begins, taking about three minutes for each breast.
In addition to MRI and handheld ultrasound, SoftVue is a great tool in the fight against breast cancer.
So, what are dense breasts?
Breasts consist of fatty tissue and fibroglandular tissue.
If you have more fibroglandular tissue than fatty tissue, your breasts are considered dense.
A mammogram can tell you if you have this common condition that affects about 50% of women.
If you already had a mammogram at ARA, your breast density will be noted on the report.
SoftVue does not replace mammography, but adds to it.
The next time you talk to your healthcare provider, talk about your breast tissue density and whether SoftVue or another supplemental screening exam would be right for you.
