Why treat varicose veins?

Aside from making your legs look better, treating varicose veins can make you more likely to participate in activities you may have avoided before because of pain, itching, and swelling. Getting your varicose veins treated can also keep you from developing nonhealing sores that can come with poor circulation. The specialists at Austin Vein Center at ARA can help you restore the health and beauty of your legs without pain or scarring.

What is venous disease

Venous disease is a common condition in which the one-way valves that keep blood moving back to the heart do not function properly, allowing blood to pool in the veins of the legs and feet. The pooling blood can cause enlarged veins that become visible and may cause swelling, pain, itching, and inflammation. Venous disease may also lead to poor circulation, discoloration of the skin, and ulcers. Venous disease is very treatable with a range of outpatient options including endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) and sclerotherapy.

Common Vein Disorders

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are large, swollen, knotted veins that develop in the soft tissue just beneath the skin, most commonly on the legs. These veins do not transport blood back to the heart efficiently because the vein walls have stretched, allowing blood to pool. Varicose veins can be itchy and painful, and can lead to nonhealing ulcers. EVLT and sclerotherapy can be the ideal treatments to eliminate varicose veins.

Reticular Veins

Reticular veins are much like varicose veins, but smaller. They appear as enlarged blue or green veins below the surface of the skin, usually on the legs. Reticular veins can be painful, swollen, and itchy. Like varicose veins, reticular veins are enlarged due to an increase in pressure from abnormal blood flow. These veins are not working to properly return the blood to the heart. Reticular veins are often feeder veins for nearby spider veins and can be easily treated using a combination of nonsurgical procedures including EVLT and sclerotherapy.

Non-Healing Ulcers

Venous ulcers can occur when the veins in your legs do not push blood back up to your heart as efficiently as they should. This causes increased pressure and excess fluid buildup in your legs which in turn can cause large sores or ulcers. Because the circulation is poor around the wound, wounds can be slow to heal or may not heal at all. EVLT and sclerotherapy can be used to improve the circulation of the area around the wound, promoting healthier tissue.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are small, visible blood vessels very close to the surface of the skin that tend to occur in patches and look like spider webs or tree branches. Spider veins are common in people over 40 and generally cause no symptoms. Spider vein treatment is considered cosmetic and is not generally covered by insurance.

ARA treatments for varicose veins and other venous conditions:

Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT)

A nonsurgical procedure that uses heat to cauterize and close the abnormal veins causing varicose veins and venous ulcers. Through a tiny nick in the skin, a thin catheter with a fiber-optic tip is inserted into the upper portion of the vein. As the catheter is withdrawn, the fiber tip emits energy or heat to the vein wall, shrinking and closing off the vein.

Sclerotherapy

An injection of medication via a tiny needle used to destroy the vein walls of spider veins, reticular veins, and small varicose veins. The body breaks down the vein and absorbs it, eliminating the vein problem. It is an easy in-office procedure, with very minimal discomfort (no more than having shots).

Microphlebectomy

A nonsurgical, in-office procedure to remove bulging varicose veins near the skin’a surface. Tiny incisions are made over the large bulging veins and a small hook permanently removes the vein in small segments, requiring no sutures.
